Abstract:
In Myanmar, the pagodas, monasteries, roof-tiered halls and royal palace buildings are usually adorned with the handicrafts of wood carvings. The craftsmanship of the sculptors is so superb that it makes an impression of real-life works. The study of the wood carvings of Myanmar throughout the successive periods of history must not pass the Ta-kes (ornamental backdrop) of pakokku neglected, as it represents the awe-struck superb craftsmanship in Myanmar traditional sculpture. These works throw light on the development of Myanmar traditional sculpture among the common people during the colonial period. The wood carvings carry the implications of exhorting the people to abide by the Dhamma (Teachings of Buddha). Besides, they also reveal the national sprit embodied in sculptors, people; this can be observed through the study of the wood carvings illustrating the Jataka stories.
