Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the thematic development of the two different text types. Its objectives are to find out types of theme applied in these types and to study how the progression of themes over the course of the texts can organize them into a unified whole. In this study, some reading passage which were prescribed for second year students were studied in order to know how the authors had constructed these texts with appropriate theme choice. They were analysed by applying the theory of Martin, Matthiessen & Painter (1997). The results indicate that the topical theme is extensively used in both texts. The interpersonal themes contribute the least in these texts.
