Abstract:
Habitat preferences of some freshwater fishes are predicted using ecomorphological trait measurements. A total of eight species of eight genera, under seven families and four orders were recorded. Out of eight species a gaint catfish locally known as Nga-yway is classified as Mystus krishnensis, not as M.gullio as mentioned by FAO.
When predicted based on their structural modifications for feeding and swimming habits, the four groups formed in an ecomophological spaces were found as the following manners: (a) Tinougil corsula as a pelagic fish that can swim constantly; (b) Tennulosa ilisha as schooling fish that has good swimming ability which may be together with Notopterus notopterus that prefers open water; (c) M. krishnensis, Channa marulius, Wallago attu and Aorichthys aor form a large group as column feeders; (d) Bagarius uarrelli, bottom feeder, lies separately as a group.
